Cherokee Lake Realty is awarding a $500 scholarship to a college-bound student while stimulating interest in Cherokee Lake. The recipient may use the funds for books, required supplies, and/or incidentals for their first year of college.
Entrants will write an essay on “What Cherokee Lake Means To The Community Of Jefferson County.” Current junior and senior students at Jefferson County High School are eligible. The essay must be typed on 8.5×11 unlined paper with a minimum of 1,000 words. Footnotes and references, if used, must be included. A cover page is required, and a number will be assigned to each paper to ensure anonymity and fairness during the judging process.
If the essay identifies a student’s family, they are asked to write it in the third person in a manner that does not identify the author. Entrants will provide a statement permitting the essay to be published. Each essay will be judged on content, grammar, and overall effect.
The purpose of the essay is to promote an interest in and knowledge of Cherokee Lake’s history. The scholarship program was implemented to help fulfill those objectives. The deadline for submission of the essay is April 12th. The winner will be selected April 25th, 2024, and the award will be presented at the Jefferson County High School Awards Ceremony May 7th, 2024.
